Bikes roll as riders honor departed friend

Friends who waste motorcycles together are special. Sure, people enjoy all kinds of activities in common. They play golf or wheel. And the bonds formed through such activities are not to be disparaged. But driving at speed astride a glorified bicycle frame supported by an inch or so of rubber somehow makes one's vital spark and the people in it very precious, and the power of sharing that experience with others is undeniable. Bikers don't merely have a circle of friends in the regular sense. Members of that family gathered in Beal Park Saturday where nearly 100 motorcyclists — along with dozens of spouses, children, friends, relations and loved ones — thundered up to the conduit shelter house for the Teila Auffert Memorial Poker Run. A tradition among bikers, a poker run is a fundraiser during which riders acquire a single playing card at each of a series of prearranged stops. Whoever has the best hand at the end of the day wins a prize. But no one was absolutely thinking about prizes on Saturday. They were thinking about a departed friend.
